Manzanita - A Pest, A Threatened Species, Or A Valuable Commodity?
Manzanita is a shrub or small tree that grows in the western US, Mexico and British Columbia. Some say it's a threatened species that should be protected, some say it's a pest that needs to be controlled, and some harvest it for making wood products. So who is right?
All three are right. Manzanita is commonly used for making wedding trees, centerpieces, bird perches, aquarium wood and many more craft products. Manzanita wood and branches are a dense hard wood that is durable and grows into attractive unique twisted forms. The wood is very beautiful but the trees are small so any wood that comes form them is small pieces that are mostly used for small crafts. It is also non toxic so it is prized by pet owners, especially bird owners for bird perches and play toys.
There is some confusion for some people with manzanita because it is also a threatened species that is protected by law. What many people don't realize is, there are several varieties of manzanita that grow in different habitats. In some areas there are varieties that are more threatened. But in other areas there are varieties that are very abundant and sometimes so abundant that they are considered a forest pest.
In parts of Northern California and Oregon, manzanita grows thick and competes with larger trees for moisture and nutrients. The thick manzanita also creates a fire hazard. In these areas manzanta is thinned to help protect the forests from fire and to reduce the competition for water. This makes forests more healthy, diverse and disease resistant.
If you have any worry about buying manzanita products because you may be contributing to harming the environment or endangering a threatened species, there is nothing to worry about, as long as you are buying it from an area where it grows abundantly. When you buy manzanita from these sources you may actually be helping to protect and enhance forest health.

I have seen this used in fish tanks , but want it for setting lampwork glass sculptures on .
I took a class in NY. with some great artists and he showed me this wood . He said he got it from Manzanita burlworks ?These looked allot like burled root ? hope this helps ?

I take it you're not in california where you can't walk without tripping over the stuff. One cheap source is EBay where you can find a lot of different manzanita assortments.
